With a background in HR I appreciate the emphasis on looking after your employees. The impact of loss on one of your senior team and key talent can have a significant impact on their wellbeing and performance. Giving them support with their grief at work when they are facing disruption from loss will help to improve their consistency and clarity.
The cost of grief to employers is huge but the Financial Cost of Grief in the workplace, is so hidden that if you search for the word “grief” on the Office for National Statistics website it will not only produce zero search results it will ask you if you meant “green”.
Through our experience we know that the number one symptom so common, almost universal, is a massively reduced ability to concentrate. We almost never hear about the emotional impact of death or any other loss.
In a survey conducted by The Grief Recovery Institute on the impact of grief at work, responses amongst Management executives was:
85% of management level decision makers rated their decision making very poor or poor in the weeks following the grief incident that affected them.
60% of those responding fair, poor or very poor indicated that some of their decisions did have a direct negative financial impact on their company.
A further 30% indicated that their decisions may have had a direct financial impact on their company.
In other words only 10% were confident their decisions didn’t impact their company bottom line negatively!
